Korean Day

UC Berkeley Korean Program Presentation Day

Since 2011, at the end of each spring semester the Korean Language Program has hosted UC Berkeley Korean Program Presentation Day (informally called Korean Day). Hosted by student MCs, Korean Day is a chance for the Korean program as a whole to gather in one place and celebrate the conclusion of the academic year through various presentations by the students that not only highlight the learnings and progress made during the year but also showcase their creative talents.

A thematic subtitle is chosen for each Korean Day which recognizes one of the most popular K-dramas, songs, literary works, or entertainment shows of the year. Below is a list of the subtitles from the past.

Year                Subtitle - Korean (English)

2011        나는 버클리 한국어 학생이다    I am a student in Korean language class at Berkeley.

Student presentations are selected through a nomination process and have included a wide variety of works such as original movies, parodies of K-dramas or traditional Korean folktales, popular animated movies dubbed in original scripts, public service advertisements, class choir, informational talks, news shows, and live performances of music and dance. Guest performers, such as campus students’ groups have also made appearances. In 2019 the famous Korean guitarist Kim Se Hwang performed on stage.

By becoming a platform for expression of students’ creative talents through the medium of Korean language and culture, Korean Day has become an annual highlight for the Korean Language Program as well as the broader Korean community at UC Berkeley. A day of celebration above all, we also hope it is a source of inspiration to all those interested in learning Korean.
